Our Story
The Benedictine Sisters of St. Gertrude Monastery, located in Imiliwaha, Njombe – Tanzania, were founded to live a life of prayer, work, and service to humanity. Guided by the timeless Rule of St. Benedict, the monastery has become a center of peace, spiritual growth, and community transformation.
Since its founding, the monastery has grown from a small community of devoted sisters into a vibrant center of faith and service. Every day, the Sisters engage in ministries that uplift the poor, educate children, heal the sick, care for orphans, and protect the environment—living the motto “Ora et Labora” – Pray and Work.
Through these ministries, we embody a faith that acts—responding to the needs of the local people with compassion, integrity, and humility. Our story continues through each life touched by our mission of prayer and service.

Our Community Impact
The Benedictine Sisters of St. Gertrude Monastery are deeply committed to transforming lives in Imiliwaha and beyond through holistic, faith-driven service. Guided by “Ora et Labora – Pray and Work,” we bring hope and healing where it’s needed most.
Healthcare: Our health ministry delivers essential medical services—maternal care, HIV awareness, nutrition education, and mobile outreach clinics—to rural communities with limited access to healthcare. Each year, thousands of patients receive compassionate, affordable care regardless of background or belief.
Education: Our schools empower children through quality education and spiritual guidance. We focus on girls’ education, giving them the opportunity to learn, dream, and create better futures for their families and communities.
Orphan & Vulnerable Child Care: Our orphanage and outreach programs provide safe homes, education, and emotional support to children in need. Every child is given the love, dignity, and opportunity to grow into a confident, faith-filled leader.
Agriculture & Sustainability: To combat poverty and hunger, our sisters teach sustainable farming and ecological stewardship. Through demonstration gardens and training, families learn to produce food, improve nutrition, and care for the environment.
Spiritual & Social Formation: We nurture the soul of our community through retreats, catechesis, and pastoral care. These programs promote reconciliation, faith renewal, and unity among families and youth.
Each initiative directly addresses the root causes of poverty, illness, and inequality—offering practical, faith-rooted solutions that restore dignity and build hope.
By supporting our programs or partnering with us, donors and friends become co-builders of hope—helping expand clinics, sponsor children’s education, improve food security, and strengthen spiritual life across generations.
